35,000 tourists to visit Peru’s Kuelap fortress in 2011
The spectacular walled archaeological citadel of Kuelap, situated in the department of Amazonas in northern Peru, expects the arrival of at least 35,000 tourists this year, the economic development manager of the regional government of Amazonas reported.

Leonardo Rojas said the regional and central governments, along with private enterprises, have been working to enhance the Kuelap fortress, seeking to promote the re-discovery of one of Peru’s greatest archaeological monument, Andina reports.

Rojas added that the objective is for the region to increase its economic development in benefit of the population by promoting activities related to "industry without smokestacks."

However, he stressed that there are still improvements that need to be completed and roads to Kuelap that need to be built, which will enable more visitors to come during the upcoming years.

The legacy of Chachapoyas culture in Amazonas, Kuelap, will continue to be restored in order to be opened to tourism soon.
