More than 140 events are expected to take place at dozens of archaeological sites, monuments and museums across Greece on Saturday, August 29 – full moon night. The special events and activities include music and theater performances, puppet theater productions, guided tours, exhibitions and film screenings as well as stargazing. A number of sites and museums will be offering free admission on the day and in some cases visitors will be welcomed up to 1 a.m.
According to the Central Archaeological Council (KAS), which authorized the August 29 events to go ahead this year, last year's August full moon events (86 in total) drew 74,000 people to 120 venues across the country.
While no events are taking place at the Acropolis in Athens (the site will be open during regular opening hours, until 8 p.m.), another popular ancient site is making a comeback following a four-year renovation project: The archaeological site of Sounio (pictured above) will welcome visitors with free admission until midnight.
