Jordan: Number of tourists reach 5.7 million with 22 % increase

The number of visitors during the January-August period rose by 22 percent to reach 5.7 million, compared to 4.8 million in the same period of 2009, according to figures from Jordan Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Petra_Jordan The Kingdom's tourism revenues in the first eight months of 2010 hit JD1.656 billion, up 26 percent from the same period last year, the figures showed Saturday.

Statistics showed the Kingdom received about 3.14 million overnight tourists in the first eight months, compared to about 2.5 million visitors in the same period of last year.

About 2.53 million same-day tourists visited the country in the period from January to August, a 13 percent year-on-year increase.

Tourism revenue is an important part of Jordan's income, which boasts many famous tourist sites, such as the rose-red city of Petra, the Dead Sea, Aqaba, Mount Nebo, Jerash, Madaba and Wadi Rum.
