Under the skilful hands of grand master carvers, plain materials available in nature can be transformed into exquisite artworks.
It is this harmonious synergy between human talent and nature that makes the exhibition Celestial Artistry — An Exhibition of Carvings by Grand Masters possible. The exhibition is organised by Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) and is open until July 7.
Carving is one of the oldest crafts developed by man and archaeological excavations show that early primitive societies had already learned to make utilitarian or decorative objects out of materials readily available in nature, such as jade, stone, bamboo, wood, ivory, horn, and bone.
For thousands of years, the Chinese have used handicraft to express their ideals of beauty. Employing creativity, industry and wisdom, they have created exquisite products.
The Celestial Artistry exhibition will showcase 48 pieces of elegant carvings in jade, stone, wood and ivory. It will display artistically and skillfully designed objects resulting from the ingenuity of the masters to create artworks which are harmonious and balanced between humanity and the environment.
The exhibition will be held in the SGM Exhibition Hall, 7th Floor, Wisma Kebudayaan SGM, 243, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, every Saturday and Sunday until July 7. It will also be on display daily from May 18 to June 2, and from June 29 to July 7.
Opening hours are from 11am to 6pm and admission is free.
In conjunction with this exhibition, the organisers are holding a series of educational programmes such as clay workshop and art trail for children.
