Crete celebrates World Tourism Day with free entrance to archaeological sites

World Tourism Day takes place annually on 27 September and this year is to be celebrated in Crete’s capital, Heraklion with a series of events from 27-29 September, including free entrance to archaeological sites such as the world famous, Knossos, considered the oldest ancient city in Europe dating back to 7000 BC.

The 3-day bonanza of activities including free concerts and exhibitions will give holidaymakers a unique opportunity to experience the culture of Crete all in one place in Heraklion with over 300 exhibitors and musical performers showcasing the bands and music of Crete as well as traditional products.

Food tastings will introduce Cretan cuisine – renowned as one of the healthiest diets in the world and on Saturday 29 September visitors can enjoy exploring Knossos, Phaestos, Malia, Tylissos and the Heraklion Greek Archaeological museum absolutely free.

The focal point for most of the activities will be Museum Square, Agios Titos (Saint Titos’) Square, Kallergon Square, Eleftherias Square and Agia Ekaterini (Saint Catherine’s) Square in Heralkion.

World Tourism Day is organised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation and has taken place annually on 27 September since 1980. The event seeks to address global challenges and to highlight the contribution the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals.
