Sixteen ancient exhibits from the Museum of Delphi will be transferred with approval of the Central Archaeological Council, to Marseille as part of the exhibition “The Treasure of the Massilians.” The exhibition will be held from January 15 to April 15, 2013 in Marseille, in the chapel of the Vieille Charite.
Among the 16 exhibits, there will be five which cannot be ”moved”. Such exhibits are considered to be valuable objects of the museum either because of their uniqueness or their fragile situation which does not allow their transfer across borders. However, these five exhibits which are parts or fragments of architectural members belonging to the Treasury of the Massilians, will eventually travel to Marseilles, as their current condition does not involve any risk.
The exhibition, which will be held as part of the events “Marseille. Cultural Capital 2013″ will include three sections. The first will be dedicated to Delphi, the second to the Treasure of the Massilians, during which will be presented in the form of holograms the building of the Treasure, and the third to the work of the French School in Greece.
The Treasures were small buildings, erected near the shrines, usually used to accommodate the tributes of the cities. The most important ones that have been found are located in Olympia and Delphi. The treasure of the Massilians combines elements of Ionic and doric architecture along with capitals of Egyptian inspiration.
