Silence, Sounds and Spaces is the title of Renzo Spiteri’s new solo work that will be released as an audio CD during live performances at St James Cavalier on November 11 and 12.
The album defines Mr Spiteri’s creative journey across a selection of the most prominent archaeological sites spread across the Maltese islands, encompassing music inspired by these sites and exploiting some of their unique natural sonic timbre. This project is the follow-up to the scoring of the music to the visitors’ audio guide of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum for which Mr Spiteri was commissioned by Heritage Malta in 2007.
“The music for the audio guide was recorded on location at the Hypogeum during a three-week period working and experimenting in specific areas of this magnificent site,” said Mr Spiteri. “The unique archaeological sites, the known and the unknown, chambers and spaces that vibrate and resonate so splendidly – these were all factors that inspired me to record music for Silence, Sounds and Spaces.”
The music of Silence, Sounds and Spaces has been composed, performed and produced using the most diverse set-up of instruments from around the world and invented instrumentation. The result is an engaging music creation that draws listeners in to Mr Spiteri’s personal musical universe. Featuring unique on-site recordings and through the use of his extraordinary world of sounds, Mr Spiteri conjures powerful images of these stunning historic sites where time stands still.
